The fight against time and the ravages of the environment are the battlefields for anti-ageing skin care products. We know that both time and environment play leading roles in skin ageing.

Recent work on the genetics of ageing have shown that there are patterns of genetic activity in the skin that change with age and that specific active agents can modify gene expression to beneficially affect these detrimental changes. Our understanding of skin genetics and age is at an early stage but is already being used and is very promising for the future. We have crossed the threshold into a new science of skin care.

The Anti-Ageing Skin Care Conference 2012 focused on the Nature of Skin Ageing, exploring the genetics, structure and ethnic differences of skin ageing.

It discussed Nurture and Skin Ageing, with presentations on anti-ageing activity, skin penetration of actives and consumer perception of product benefits and effects.

Other papers looked at new methods and approaches to skin testing, generation of clinical data for anti-ageing product functionality, claims support and substantiation for advertising; also the translation of scientific concepts into consumer relevant claims and the differences between markets. There were also discussions and presentations on anti-ageing claims and advertising controls in major international markets.
